RED LIKE VALENTINO

Known by his first name, Valentino Garavani is one of Italy's most renowned fashion designers. Universally known for his haute couture dresses in luxurious and romantic red cloth, he has also created a whole line of accessories and a range of perfumes.

Valentino – The Couturier

Valentino Garavani was born on May 11, 1932, in Lombardy, Northern Italy. At the age of 17, passionate about fashion, he moved to Paris to pursue his studies at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts and the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.

At the end of his studies, he went to Jean Dessès to design models, and then after a short stay with his friend Guy Laroche, he returned to Italy to create his own House in Rome with his parents' financial help.

In 1960, like a Pierre Bergé for Yves Saint Laurent, he met Giancarlo Giammetti for a long-term relationship and a financial partnership that enabled him to ensure his development.

In 1962 he presented his first haute couture collection at the Pitti Palace in Florence. Acclaimed by critics, he quickly became the designer of choice for celebrities. After establishing himself as the leading designer of Italian haute couture, in 1967, he received the prestigious Neiman Marcus Award in the United States for his "colourless collection" for which he resisted the trend for decadent colour palettes, opting instead for beige, white, and ivory tones. It was this collection that saw the omnipresent 'V' become the logo of its brand.

The same year, he designed Jackie Kennedy's dress for her wedding with Aristotle Onassis. Jackie O was a loyal customer and friend of Valentino's.

Valentino - The designer

In 1969, the designer opened his first ready-to-wear stores in Milan and Rome, before moving to New York, where he spent most of the 1970s in the company of famous personalities from the world of fashion and art.

In the 1980s, he launched his first line of Valentino children's clothing and a collection of clothing for young adults called Olivier.

In 1989, he opened the Valentino Academy in Rome, a cultural centre, to present art exhibitions and cultural activities.

In 1998 he sold his company while remaining at the head of the brand's design. In 2008, he presented his last ready-to-wear fashion show during Fashion Week in Paris. An incredible tribute from her colleagues and favourite models, including Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, and Eva Herzigova.

Although he retired for the Valentino brand, the famous designer is still working on special operations. He designed the actress Anne Hathaway's wedding dress at the end of 2012 and, more recently, the wedding dress worn by Princess Madeleine of Sweden for her royal wedding in June 2013.

Valentino - Perfumes

The first Valentino fragrance was launched in 1979, Valentino for Women, an opulent floral scent with a superb gadroon bottle all in curves created by Pierre Dinant. This fragrance with limited distribution was relaunched in 1986 without ever being able to demonstrate its exquisite quality.

The Vendetta lines followed successively with a feminine and a masculine fragrance in 1991, the Very Valentino lines in 1998, the Rock' n and V lines in 2006, for each of the women's and men's fragrances.

In 2010 Valentino perfumes leave the Procter & Gamble fold for a partnership with the Puig group. All the old perfumes are removed from sale in favour of a new range that is more luxurious and more in line with Italian haute couture. In 2011, Valentina, a perfume inspired by Rome and Italian culture, will be launched, a delicate and elegant fragrance that will be the foundation of the new range.

In 2012 Valentina Assoluto, 2013 Valentina Acqua Floreale, 2015 Valentina Rose, and in 2016 Valentina Poudre will follow.

At the same time, Valentino fragrances are launching their men's scent: Valentino Uomo, a fragrance with a woody, classic, and casual character. A tribute to Rome, and La Dolce Vita, with its sophisticated and graphic bottle.

Valentino fragrances represent an Italian, luxurious, elegant, and generous fashion.
